Barack Obama berhasil meniti tangga sukses menjadi senator kulit hitam kelima dalam sejarah Amerika Serikat, setelah sebelumnya menjadi dosen di Universitas Chicago, senator junior di Negara Bagian Illinios, dan presiden Afrika-Amerika pertama kalinya pada jurnal bergengsi, Havard Law Review, sewaktu ia masih belajar di Universitas Havard. Kini ia adalah salah satu calon kuat wakil Partai Demokrat dalam pemilihan Presiden AS pada 2008.
Obama lahir di Hawaii pada tanggal 4 Agustus 1961, dari pasangan Barack “Hussein” Obama Senior, seorang mahasiswa ekonomi dan penganut Muslim yang taat dari Kenya, dan Ann Dunham, seorang perempuan kulit putih dari Kansas. Kedua orangtuanya bercerai ketika Obama berumur dua tahun. Setelah perceraian itu, ayahnya memutuskan untuk menempuh studi doktoral di Harvard University sebelum akhirnya kembali ke Kenya. Sedangkan, ibunya menikah kembali dengan orang Indonesia yang bernama Lolo Soetoro dan pindah ke Indonesia ketika Obama berumur enam tahun. Ia dan ibunya tinggal di Jakarta selama empat tahun, ia pun pernah menyebut dirinya sebagai Jakarta’s street kid. Barack kembali ke Hawaii seorang diri dan tinggal bersama kakek-neneknya hingga ia menamatkan sekolah menengah atasnya pada 1979.
Pada 1982, Obama mendapat kabar bahwa ayahnya meninggal dalam sebuah kecelakaan mobil di Kenya. Kematian ayahnya begitu memukul dirinya dan membawanya dalam sebuah belenggu. Nyatanya, ia hanya sekali melihat ayahnya sejak kedua orangtuanya bercerai, ketika Barack berusia sepuluh tahun.
Seiring dengan meningkatnya popularitas dirinya secara nasional, Barack menuliskan riwayat dan pandangan hidupnya. Dreams from My Father adalah karya pertamanya, sedangkan buku dalam genggaman Anda ini adalah yang kedua. Nama Abu Nawas begitu populernya sehingga cerita-cerita yang mengandung humor banyak yang dinisbatkan berasal dari Abu Nawas.
Tokoh semacam Abu Nawas yang mampu mengatasi berbagai persoalan rumit dengan style humor atau bahkan humor politis temyata juga tidak hanya ada di negeri Baghdad. Kita mengenal Syekh Juha yang hampir sama piawainya dengan Abu Nawas juga Nasaruddin Hoja sang sufi yang lucu namun cerdas. Kita juga mengenal Kabayari di Jawa Barat yang konyol namun temyata juga cerdas.
Abu Nawas! Setelah mati pun masih bisa membuat orang tertawa. Di depan makamnya ada pintu gerbang yang terkunci dengan gembok besar sekali. Namun di kanan kiri pintu gerbang itu pagarnya bolong sehingga orang bisa leluasa masuk untuk berziarah ke makamnya. Apa maksudnya dia berbuat demikian. Mungkin itu adalah simbol watak Abu Nawas yang sepertinya tertutup namun sebenarnya terbuka, ada sesuatu yang misteri pada diri Abu Nawas, ia sepertinya bukan orang biasa, bahkan ada yang meyakini bahwa dari kesederhanaannya ia adalah seorang guru sufi namun ia tetap dekat dengan rakyat jelata bahkan konsis membela mereka yang lemah dan tertindas.
Begitu banyak cerita lain yang diadopsi menjadi Kisah Abu Nawas sehingga kadang-kadang cerita tersebut nggak masuk akal bahkan terlalu menyakitkan orang timur, saya curiga jangan-jangan cerita-cerita Abu Nawas yang sangat aneh itu sengaja diciptakan oleh kaum orientalis untuk menjelek-jelekkan masyarakat Islam. Karena itu membaca cerita Abu Nawas kita harus kritis dan waspada.
